Ashlyn McVean doesn't believe in fairy tales. That is, until Ashlyn is thrown into the crosshairs of grudges her grandmother created long ago. After finding out she is one of two people able to cross between faerie realms, Ashlyn is faced with trying to understand her abilities, along with navigating a new relationship with her boyfriend, Liam. As if being on a centuries old hit list and dealing with crazed pixies isn't enough, her new abilities mean trouble for Liam. Knowing her new life puts everyone she loves in danger, Ashlyn must decide what's most important in her life between friends, family, love, and ultimately, realms.

Wow, this book took me completely by surprise!

Megan Curd opens this book with an incredible, if unfortunate scene, which gives you an instant hint that all is not quite so normal with our female character, Ashlyn. There is more to her than meets the eye. And once she returns home, the odd behavior of her initially not-so-nice grandmother, confirms it. But what exactly, or who is Ashlyn?

We embark on a journey to Ireland as she visits relatives with her odd best friend, and are introduced to some really interesting characters, including to handsome Liam who is now on my list of book crushes. He is quiet, strong and protective - the type of guy every teenage girl should dream about.

As the story unravels, and friends become foes, and foes turn out to be friends, as a reader, I was truly transported into a great action story. Though I somewhat apprehensively started reading YA which involves the 'fae' and fae-like beings, I am seriously becoming a fan of these tricksters and also honorable creatures in the YA genre. They are interesting and complicated, and I have been lucky to read some really good stories, written by very talented authors that do a great job of introducing these characters and developing their somewhat complex world.

Ashlyn started out as a typical teenager who is quickly 'coming of age' and discovering her complicated heritage and a past she was not even aware of. Not to mention powers that she holds that no one in this story can really yet fully grasp, not even herself. It was fun to discover what she was able to do, and wonder along with her what else she is capable of.

Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your opinion, all is not yet disclosed in this first installment. After all, some secrets or discoveries need to be left for the following book of the series. With much anticipation, I look forward to Bridger #2 and really see what Ashlyn is truly capable of as she battles the evil forces in her life. Luckily it was published in March so I don't have to wait!!!

The romance of this novel was evident and subtle at the same time in comparison with some YA I have read. Instant attraction, with a slow build up to actually connecting. Not to mention, another sad love triangle. I say sad because Reese is such a likeable and wonderful character and I feel bad that his feelings were not returned. However, it was pretty fun to watch both Reese and Liam exercise their testosterone muscles at each other, while fighting for Ashlyn's attention.

I found this book very reminiscent of "The Iron King" series, and that is a very good thing. I recently picked up the first of the series, and absolutely LOVED it. So if you are a fan of "The Iron King" I am pretty confident you will enjoy this book.

It was a really fun story and I am looking forward to reading the second book of the series. The initial cover was ok but this particular version is much more eye catching I think!
