Eighteen-year-old Katie Allred is socially awkward and unpopular at school. The only child of parents who had her right out of high school, Katie is herself about to leave the nest, even though she hardly feels ready.

Katie’s new after-school job at the Zimble Box Corporation draws her into the complex social strata of high school cliques and backstabbing friends in ways she never imagined. Katie soon discovers there’s something very strange about the “in” crowd at school---and about her employer, too. Shortly after starting her new job, the Contagion breaks out, plunging her town and the entire nation into chaos as zombie shadow forces come out into the open, ravaging the streets. Katie goes into hiding and her parents disappear, along with almost everyone else she knows.

But Katie soon discovers she has special powers that help her survive. She’s a Beacon, someone with the innate ability to help zombies produce children. It’s a power her employer — and what little remains of the U.S. government — both want to exploit for their own ends. Not only that, it runs in her family---which has a secret past Katie never knew about until now.

Enter Agent Morehouse of the FBI Special Zombie Control Unit. A reformed zombie working undercover, he suppresses his urge to eat human flesh in order to serve and save humanity. But Agent Morehouse can’t help but be attracted to a Beacon like Katie, and she to him. Even as they fight zombies the world over, they must fight their intense attraction to each other, hoping to keep Katie from suffering Agent Morehouse’s terrible zombie fate.
Part horror, part comedy, all madness and suspense, Love & Zombies is a lunatic burn through three days in the life of Henry—days in which he battles to stay alive, and get back to his love without becoming (un)dead.

"Twilight. With Zombies.

Ahhhh... No.

Not even close.

Not only is that very inaccurate in describing this first book in the series, but there is more information in the book blurb about what is going on in this story than I actually got from the book. I haven't read the next novels in the series. Don't even think they are published yet. But this synopsis is probably the description of the whole series, I am thinking. Agent Morehouse doesn't even make an appearance until the very end of the novel!!

Hence, I am disappointed right off the bat, because this book was definitely not what I was expecting.

There were more plot holes in this story than a good chunk of Swiss Cheese. Throw in a cast of two dimensional characters, of which none were deep or interesting enough for me to feel curious about or connect with, and it was a pretty superficial reading experience.

That being said, this novel had a couple of good things going for it.

Zombies walking around among humans undetected because they look just like us, was a pretty interesting concept.  The hints were subtle, and any normal person would have explained the eccentricities away, so that was believable.

Also, the pace of the story was steady and it kept me reading. Though I didn't get them, I wanted answers.

When it comes to zombie novels, I need to know the why, how and what. This had more of a focus on the day to day in the life of Katie, and it had none of the elements that excite me about zombie apocalypses.  I wouldn't classify the ending as a cliffhanger, but it definitely leaves it open for a continuation which, for the reasons above, I honestly have no interest in reading.

  1. This sounds like a Zombie book to avoid although I guess it is good that you did enjoy it somewhat in the end.

Definitely not my favorite zombie novel of the month, that is for sure.
